The position on nature expressed in the quoted passage is not necessarily Cicero's. "On moral ends" is one the works Cicero structured as a "dialogue" where different characters exolain different philosophical positions and defend them from critical questioning from the other characters. The character "Marcus Porcius Cato" is representing Stoic philosophy.

Jan ok- love your thoughtful posts. I gave also held long conversations with the device but I use it to clarify my thoughts not as a peer. It seems to me the rules of logic can be mechanically applied and with great skill to appear as human reasoning but it is still a machine, right? It is, and so far it is thoughtless and not self aware. It is still a machine. A good one even an advanced one but a machine. Arthur C. Clark coined a law: any sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from magic. I’m afraid we might be falling into this logic trap? But I grant you it’s a great tool!!!
